4.5 inch flap disc is an abrasive product found in the coated abrasive family and used on an angle grinder. The discs are made up of many layered, overlapping sections of abrasive material or 'flaps'.

● 4.5 Inch Flap Discs For Aluminum
Aluminum melts more readily and has a lower melting temperature than other metals. As a result, during grinding, the aluminum substance coats the 4.5 inch flap disc, hiding the grit and revealing only little pieces of aluminum. Use a T29 conical disc at a 15-degree angle to provide the most surface contact for removing stock. Use a T27 flat disc that is parallel to your work area if you need to surface-clean or produce a smooth finish. Use gentle, steady pressure to enhance grinding and lessen loading for the best results.
● 4.5 Inch Flap Discs For Wood
4.5 inch flap discs are excellent woodworking tools. The 4.5 inch flap discs made for use on wood are comparable to those made for use on metal in nature. Aluminum oxide grits are suitable for use in wood applications. Use your angle grinder's 4.5 inch flap discs on wood in the same way you would a grinding wheel. In general, operators should choose conical 4.5 inch flap discs for initial high-volume grinding and flat 4.5 inch flap discs for precision refinements.
● A Few Specialty Shapes And Styles Are Also Available:
4.5 inch flap discs also come in a range of sizes, generally from about 4 to 7 inches in diameter, with the mini discs smaller still. Smaller discs are designed for use on die grinders to provide smooth grinding and enhanced conformability in tight areas. will rotate more quickly and provide a faster cut rate, whereas larger discs will rotate more slowly. Larger-diameter wheels contain more abrasive, however, so with the right care, because of their size will cover larger areas and will last longer and provide a higher rate of stock removal over the life of the disc.

When Should You Use A 4.5 Inch Flap Disc
4.5 Inch flap discs are the recommended choice when you're working with metal, especially when you intend to make right angle cuts. Being flexible, these discs make it easier to achieve contours in the metal.
For grinding, apply heavy pressure and for finishing, apply light pressure. You thereby avoid the downtime caused by switching discs between tasks. Other benefits include:

Tips for Getting the Best Results When Using 4.5 Inch Flap Discs
When working with aluminum, always ensure proper surface preparation before welding. Use a surface grinder to remove aluminum oxides from welding sites. By removing these aluminum oxides, the weld will have a better chance to hold onto the metal.
Don't use the 4.5 inch flap discs you use with other metals to grind aluminum. The particles from the other project can contaminate the surface of the aluminum, affecting weld strength or finish appearance. Specify discs for working with aluminum and keep them separated and labeled to prevent cross-contamination.
Excessive pressure can increase the workload of the operator. It causes the aluminum to melt and adhere to the disc in a process known as loading. When you put too much pressure on the aluminum, the metal on the flaps will cover the abrasive material, preventing it from working as needed.
Don't use lubricants, waxes or oils to reduce the friction heat created during grinding. These materials can also clog the disc, contaminate the surface or create a fire hazard. Instead, to avoid causing problems from too much heat when working with aluminum, lower the pressure used and choose the appropriate grit and disc density for the project.
Pick the best disc for the way you want to use it. For example, for removing material or shaping, select a conical T29 4.5 inch flap disc. Use these types of discs at a 15-degree angle to the surface to get the greatest abrasive-to-surface contact. Maximizing contact will also optimize the efficiency of the 4.5 inch flap disc. When doing finishing or preparing surfaces for welding, choose a flat T27 disc and grind it flat on the surface for finishing.

How Long Do 4.5 Inch Flap Discs Last

4.5 inch flap discs are constructed with the same grain types as found in bonded abrasives, but their layered construction gives them a much softer, more forgiving feel. As a result, they are ideal for grinding and finishing a product - at the same time - which helps save time and money. They do not, however, work as well for finishing rougher surfaces that require more aggressive action, such as a material with torch slag. A grinding disc is better suited here, as the 4.5 inch flap disc's cloth can catch and/or tear too easily.
These discs feature coated abrasives that adhere grains to a backing cloth, typically a cotton, polyester or blended material. This abrasive cloth is then cut into smaller flaps and layered radially to form the 4.5 inch flap disc.
