What Is the Chemical Composition of Cut off Disc

 

A cut off disc is used for cutting various types of base materials made of metals, plastics, or the like. In general, the cut off disc is fabricated by pouring a composition including abrasive particles, a binder resin, and filler, into a disk-shaped mold, and compressing the composition at a predetermined pressure, followed by curing. Herein, as the binder resin, a phenolic resin, which is known as a heat-resistant resin with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of about 200° C., and a heat decomposition temperature of about 300° C., has been mainly used.


When a base material is cut by using such a cut off disc, the friction between the cut off disc and the base material generates heat, thereby increasing the temperature at the cutting area. This causes thermal damage to the cut off disc.


Such thermal damage to the cut off disc is one of the main causes of limitation of a cutting operation. Therefore, a research on the friction heat caused by the use of the cut off disc has recently been actively conducted. When the cut off disc is used to cut the base material, the friction between the cut off disc and the base material generates a friction heat, thereby highly increasing the temperature of a cutting area, that is, the interface temperature between the cut off disc and the base material, up to about 600° C.


Even though a heat-resistant resin (such as a phenolic resin) is used as a binder resin, a high friction heat generated at the cutting area heat-decomposes (thermally deforms) the phenolic resin existing on the cut off disc portion corresponding to the cutting area, thereby separating abrasive particles bound by the phenolic resin from the cut off disc. Such separation of the abrasive particles repeatedly occurs whenever the cut off disc is used, and thus the life of the cut off disc is reduced.

 

How Does a Cut off Disc Work

Often cut off discs are made from a solid abrasive disc. These discs are often used for cutting metal, they are composed of an abrasive mix of grit and adhesive that is formed into a thin, rigid disc with fiber webbing running through it for strength. Some discs used for cutting ceramic tile or stone are made from a solid disc with an edge coated with diamond grit.


The most common size for these cutting wheels is 4+1⁄2 inches in diameter, however they can range from 2 to 16 inches in diameter with a thickness range from .045 in. to .125 in. Type 1 discs are flat, and type 27 discs have a raised hub. These wheels are strong but are not immune to breaking.


If a cut off disc breaks while in use, fragments could injure the operator or nearby co-workers. To avoid breaking cut off discs, never exceed the maximum speed (RPM) specified on the disc, and do not overload the disc by cutting with excess force or jamming the wheel into your workpiece.

All good quality discs will have an expiry date stamped on them somewhere. This is usually found on the central metal ring or on the disc itself. Occasionally it will be on a label attached to the disc.


It is important to note that this is a "use by" date that should never be exceeded.

How Do I Use Cut Off Discs Safely
 

Always be sure to comply with all accident prevention regulations when using grinding discs and cut-off wheels. The appropriate industrial safety pictograms are found on all discs and wheels. The cut off discs should always be replaced if showing any sign of damage which includes visible cracks, chips or any signs of bending or twists to the wheel.
