Super Thin Cutting Wheel Materials

Super thin cutting wheels typically contain a few different materials, primarily the grains that do the cutting, the bonds that hold the grains in place, and the fiberglass that reinforces the wheels.

Grain

The grains within the abrasive of a super thin cutting wheel are the particles that perform the cutting.
Grains may come in several types. Common types of grains for super thin cutting wheels include ceramic alumina, zirconia alumina, aluminum oxide, and silicon carbide.
● Ceramic alumina: Ceramic alumina performs exceptionally well on steel, stainless steel, and other hard-to-cut metals, including inconel, high nickel alloy, titanium and armored steel. When used and maintained properly, it offers a superior lifespan and cut, and it tends to cut cooler than other grains, so it reduces heat discoloration.
● Zirconia alumina: Zirconia alumina provides superior cutting for steel, structural steel, iron, and other metals, and it is ideal for rail cutting and other heavy-duty applications. It offers a fast cut and a long life and holds up under extreme pressure.
● Aluminum oxide: Aluminum oxide is one of the most common abrasive grains. It provides a fast initial cut rate and consistent performance for steel and other metal.
● Silicon carbide: Silicon carbide is an extremely hard grain that produces very sharp and fast cutting. However, it is also friable, meaning it is not as tough as other grains.
The grain's grit helps determine its physical and performance properties as well. The grit refers to the size of the individual abrasive particles, in the same way sandpaper grains receive classification by their size. Grit sizes range from 16 to 60, with smaller numbers indicating larger, coarser particles and larger numbers indicating smaller, finer particles.

Bond

The bond of a super thin cutting wheel is the substance that holds the abrasive grains in place.
Manufacturers often refer to the grade, or hardness, of a wheel. The grade signifies not the hardness of the abrasive grains themselves but the hardness of the bond holding them in place. Generally, under identical conditions, a harder bond means the super thin cutting wheel will have a longer lifespan, whereas a softer bond means the super thin cutting wheel will have a shorter lifespan.
A softer bond does provide certain advantages -It sheds its grains more rapidly to provide a faster cut. With a stronger bond, the bond may hold the grains in place after they have become worn. A softer bond releases them faster to reveal fresh, sharp grains more often and increase the wheel's cut rate.
With certain metals, it is important not to introduce contaminants into the metal when cutting. When cutting stainless steel and aluminum, always make sure the abrasive contains less than 0.1% of chlorine, iron, and sulfur, ensuring it is contaminant-free. Contaminant-free products will have identifying labels.
One of the bonds commonly used with abrasive grains for super thin cutting wheels is resinoid. Resinoid bonds contain organic compounds. They tend to have better shock resistance than other types of bonds and can withstand operation at elevated peripheral speeds. They are ideal for cut-off applications, and they allow for self-sharpening by exposing new grains. Some specialized bonds are resin-over-resin bonded. These bonds provide additional moisture and heat resistance, as well as a stronger overall bond to make better use of the grains.

Fiberglass

Super thin cutting wheels contain fiberglass that may provide single, double, or triple reinforcement. Single reinforcement relies on a single layer of fiberglass and is useful for delivering exceptional cutting speed while reducing burrs on the workpiece. Double and triple reinforcement use multiple layers of fiberglass to provide added support for high-vibration and heavy-duty industrial applications.

Where to Start When Selecting a Super Thin Cutting Wheel
product-1-1

Super thin cutting wheels are efficient and made from bonded adhesives. Bonded adhesives include a mix of resin and quality abrasive material. This mix is hardened into a solid super thin cutting wheel to provide a stable, lasting cutting surface. We offer super thin cutting wheels compatible with die grinders, angle grinders, chop saws, stationary saws and high-speed gas saws. The best wheel option fits the tool and does not exceed its maximum rpm safety rating.

Wheel type is another consideration when selecting a super thin cutting wheel. Type 1 wheels have a flat profile that allows for deep cuts. These wheels are also often referred to as cut-off wheels or slicing wheels. Offers type 1 super thin cutting wheels for die grinders, angle grinders, chop saws, stationary saws and high-speed gas saws.

The second type is a type 27 super thin cutting wheel, which has a depressed center or raised hub that provides added clearance when working at a constrained angle. These depressed-center super thin cutting wheels are available in a range of sizes for right angle grinders.

Metals vary in hardness and composition. In addition to tool compatibility and wheel type, the super thin cutting wheel needs to fit the application and the metal material being cut. Wheel thickness is something else to consider - when cutting metal, less is sometimes more. In selecting a wheel, always choose the thinnest wheels that will perform the cut while maintaining the desired product life. Thinner wheels will remove less material and create fewer burrs during the cut.

Proper Positioning and Other Tips: Super Thin Cutting Wheel

In addition to paying attention to designations for RPM rating, size, and material, you should also follow these tips when using super thin cutting wheels.

● Use the super thin cutting wheel at a 90-degree angle, perpendicular to the work surface.

● Apply the proper amount of pressure-not too much, not too little-to allow the super thin cutting wheel to do the work. Always avoid pushing too hard on the wheel, which can cause the grinder to stall or kick back or give you a much less efficient cutting action. It also increases the chances that you will slip or lose control of the tool, which can cause damage or injury.

● Choose a grinder with the highest torque or amperage available for the application, as this will help the wheel to do more of the work. Instead of using a 4.5-in. wheel on a 6-amp grinder, use a 4.5-in. wheel on a 10-amp grinder. The RPM rating remains the same, but the tool will provide more torque to cut into the metal.

● Choose a tool and consumables that offer quick, consistent cutting, which typically provides the most efficient performance.

● Remember, the thinner the super thin cutting wheel, the more susceptible it can be to side loading, which is a term that describes when the wheel bends while moving side to side in the cut. This can turn dangerous if you lean too hard on a wheel, which can cause the wheel to break or jam in the cut. It can also reduce the efficiency of the wheel and increase the cut time.

● Store the wheel in a clean, dry environment, and avoid placing it in water or mud. This helps minimize environmental effects that could degrade its performance or cause it to crack or wear prematurely. The performance of resinoid bond tends to deteriorate when the wheel is stored for extended periods of time, so be sure to use FIFO (first in, first out) when using wheels.

● Inspect the wheel and consumable before each use to check for signs of damage or wear. super thin cutting wheels can become harder to control as they wear down. If you can no longer make a safe cut because the super thin cutting wheel's diameter is worn so thin, then the best course of action is to replace it.

Applications of Super Thin Cutting Wheels

Pipeline
When constructing or repairing a pipeline, professionals need super thin cutting wheels capable of performing well in harsh conditions and lasting over long periods of your time. Alumina depressed center super thin cutting wheels deliver the proper combination of performance and value when cutting steel and other metals. The depressed center provides added clearance when performing at a constrained angle, and .045 wheel thickness is right for cutting applications in the fab yard or field repairs.

Metal Fabrication
Super thin cutting wheels support fabrication shops by providing aggressive cut-rate and long wheel life whether you're working with aluminum, armored steel, high-nickel alloys, steel, and chrome, titanium, or alloy steel.

Shipbuilding
In shipbuilding, nearly every component needs fabrication - from the ship's large external structures to smaller pieces like pipes, stairs, and handrails. While automation can assist with the manufacture of larger systems, smaller systems require cutting and grinding by hand before and after welding. super thin cutting wheels help shipbuilders get the work done quickly and safely so you'll meet tight deadlines.

Manufacturing
No matter what sort of product you manufacture, you would like to consider precision and price at every step of the method to satisfy clients and stay before the competition.

Food And Pharmaceuticals
We provide contaminant-free super thin cutting wheels for chrome steel cutting applications within the food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. These abrasive products contain but 0.1% sulfur, chlorine, and iron.

How Do You Read a Super Thin Cutting Wheel Size

The size of the super thin cutting wheel is marked as dimensions in mm. 230 x 3 x 22.2mm. This represents the wheel's diameter x thickness x hole size.

The specification of the grinding wheel is marked as a series of letters and numbers. WA 60 K 7 V. This represents the type of abrasive material, the grit size, the grade, the structure and the bond type.

The range of material markings, grit sizes, grades, structures and bonds depends on the product and the manufacturer, but the table above gives a general outline of common markings seen on abrasive wheels.

The maximum operating speed is marked on every large grinding wheel (above 80mm in diameter) in two ways:
● The peripheral surface speed, given in metres per second. For example, 80m/s.
● The rotational speed, given in revolutions per minute. For example, 8500rpm.
● For smaller grinding wheels (below 80mm in diameter), the maximum operating speed is provided on a separate notice which must be stored alongside the wheel.

For high speeds, colour-coded stripes are also marked across the centre of the super thin cutting wheel. The colours are:
● 50m/s – Blue
● 60m/s – Yellow
● 80m/s – Red
● 100m/s – Green
● 125m/s – Blue/Yellow

FAQ

Q: What is super thin cutting wheel?

A: Super thin cutting wheels, or cut-off wheels, differ from grinding wheels in their function and structure. Where grinding wheels use an abrasive to grind large pieces of material off a workpiece from a shallow angle, super thin cutting wheels typically make narrow, precise cuts at 90-degree angles. Consequently, super thin cutting wheels are often thinner than grinding wheels - though they do not have the lateral strength required for side grinding, their minimal thickness makes them better for clean, accurate cuts.

Q: What is the difference between 40 grit and 60 grit super thin cutting wheel?

A: Typically, 40 grit is used for grinding metal quickly, 60 grit will provide good stock removal but with a smoother finish and 80 grit is better for shaping and light stock removal. Diamond blades are a popular choice for use with angle grinders.

Q: Do super thin cutting wheels expire?

A: Super thin cutting wheels should be replaced when they hit their expiration date. This can be found imprinted on the metal center of the disc. Time, UV light, changes in temperature, humidity, and other storing conditions cause the bonding agents that keep the disc together to break down.

Q: What shouldn't you do with a super thin cutting wheel?

A: Never grind with a super thin cutting wheel: A super thin cutting wheel doesn't have the fiberglass reinforcement that a grinding wheel does, so it can be dangerous to grind with a super thin cutting wheel. Only use a super thin cutting wheel for cutting. Combination wheels can be used for cutting and grinding and are marked accordingly.

Q: How many types of super thin cutting wheels are there?

A: Super thin cutting wheels come in a few different types. Some common types are type 1, type 27, type 41, and type 42, where the various numbers signify the wheels' different shapes and properties.

Q: Can you use a super thin cutting wheel on masonry?

A: Super thin cutting wheels contain either zirconia or aluminum oxide, depending on their intended use. Silicon-carbide abrasive particles are sharper and harder, and thus continue cutting efficiently on concrete or other masonry surfaces.

Q: How do you store super thin cutting wheels?

A: Thin organic bonded wheels, such as those used for cutting off, should be laid flat on a flat steel surface or similarly rigid material away from excessive heat, moisture, and other liquids to prevent warpage. Loose blotters should not be placed between stacked thin wheels.

Q: Can you sand with a super thin cutting wheel?

A: Angle grinders are a multi-use sanding tool that are compatible with a wide range of wheels and discs, including resin fiber discs, overlap discs, super thin cutting wheels, grinding wheels, and much more. This allows for several different types of sanding applications!

Q: How do you use a super thin cutting wheel?

A: When using a super thin cutting wheel, we recommend using a two handed golf like grip to hold and guide the tool and go for a right angle. If you angle the wheel in the cut, the wheel will probably break.

Q: Can super thin cutting wheels be used to grind material?

A: Using a super thin cutting wheel for side grinding can have serious consequences. The photographs seen here show what can happen to a cut-off wheel when the side is used for deburring or grinding. The workpiece can cut through the reinforcing side fiberglass weakening the wheel. This may result in wheel breakage and injury.

Q: What is the difference between a type 1 and a type 27 super thin cutting wheel?

A: Type 1 grinding wheels are flat and used for a variety of grinding and cutting tasks on flat surfaces, edges, and angles. Type 27 grinding wheels have a saucer shape with a depressed center, making them ideal for grinding and cutting on contoured surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.

Q: What is a super thin cutting wheel used for?

A: Super thin cutting wheels, or super thin cutting wheels, differ from grinding wheels in their function and structure. Where grinding wheels use an abrasive to grind large pieces of material off a workpiece from a shallow angle, super thin cutting wheels typically make narrow, precise cuts at 90-degree angles.

Q: What are super thin cutting wheels made of?

A: High-quality cutting discs are made of resinoid-bonded abrasives. The bonding agent, resinoid, holds the wheel and the abrasive material together. As it wears away through use, fresh sharp grains are exposed to continue cutting to extend the long life of the product.
The most commonly used abrasives embedded in the resinoid wheels are aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.
Reinforced cutoff wheels are the most durable cut wheels. They are reinforced with fiberglass to provide extra strength to last long and avoid breaking from extra pressure forced on it.

Q: Is it safe to grind with a super thin cutting wheel?

A: Cutting-off wheels are for cutting on the periphery only. Cutting-off wheels are thin by design and do not have adequate lateral strength for side grinding.

Q: What is the difference between grinding wheel and cutting wheel?

A: Super thin cutting wheels or super thin cutting wheels have different applications and structures than grinding wheels. super thin cutting wheels cut small material workpieces at 90-degree angles, whereas grinding wheels grind large material workpieces from a low angle. As a result, super thin cutting wheels are quite thinner than grinding wheels.

Q: Can a super thin cutting wheel cut wood?

A: First of all, you should never cut wood with regular angle grinder cutting discs.

Q: Can a super thin cutting wheel cut stainless steel?

A: It is essential to choose a super thin cutting wheel made from abrasives compatible with stainless steel to ensure the workpiece isn't contaminated. The right super thin cutting wheel for stainless steel will increase efficiency, reduce rework and eliminate cross-contamination.

Q: Why do cutting wheels break?

A: Improper machine conditions. Loose wheel spindle, excessive end play, and loose or vibrating machine parts such as the work-table and the work holder may cause the wheel to bend in the cut and break.

Q: What thickness cut off a wheel?

A: Wheel thickness is the most important factor to consider while choosing the right super thin cutting wheel. For general purpose cutting of stainless or mild steel choose a 1mm or 1.6mm thick wheel. For cutting through hard metals choose standard thin 0. 045 inch & ultra-thin 1 mm super thin cutting wheels.

Q: Can you put super thin cutting wheels on angle grinder?

A: For flat cutting discs, mount the flange with the flat side towards the wheel. Use the key or wrench to fix tightly to the grinder. Once the wheel is in place, it should not move or rotate. Take care not to over tighten the flange, this might damage the disc and make it hard to remove the stub when you're finished.
